X-Ice North 4 Features

The Michelin X-Ice North 4 features a cloud-shaped directional tread pattern incorporating, depending on the size, at least 250 newly designed studs per tire.  By comparison, a standard studded winter tire typically has about 100 studs per tire. In developing this tire model, Michelin engineers paid close attention to every detail, from the shape and material of the studs to their placement, to ensure optimal interaction. The stud shape was inspired by the studs on winter rally cars, ensuring excellent traction on icy roads even at high speeds. Small shock-absorbing cushions are embedded in the tread base to reduce noise levels. The tire’s rubber compound has also been improved. It has been made even more flexible and wear-resistant thanks to a whole range of the latest chemical compounds. The massive, symmetrically arranged tread blocks also incorporate 3D sipes, which, in tandem with the studs, provide traction on ice and help disperse water from the tire’s contact patch with the road. A new drainage channel system design has also been developed, which plays a crucial role in handling slush or water.
