The Michelin X-Ice North 4 SUV features a cloud-shaped directional tread pattern with at least 250 studs per tire, depending on size. By comparison, a standard studded winter tire typically has about 100 studs per tire. In developing this tire model, Michelin engineers paid meticulous attention to every detail—from the shape and material of the studs to their placement and how they interact with one another. The stud shape was inspired by the studs on winter rally cars, ensuring excellent traction on icy roads even at high speeds. The tire’s rubber compound has also been improved, making it even more flexible and wear-resistant.
