Our experts will help you choose the best winter tyres for your car and driving style. Factors to consider when buying winter tyres: overall tyre performance, especially braking on ice, dry and wet snow, side-slip resistance, tyre wear resistance, as well as noise and fuel economy.

Note that tyre performance decreases with wear. Although legislation allows winter driving on tyres with a tread depth of at least 4 mm,MMK Riepu Serviss does not recommend the use of such tyres. For safe winter driving, we recommend using tyres that are as fresh as possible and have a soft rubber compound with a tread depth of at least 6-7 mm.

Please note that you can change your car tyres to studded winter tyres from 1 October. To ensure your comfort and the safety of those around you, we recommend changing tyres according to the weather, as summer tyres lose their properties when the air temperature drops below +7 °C – longer braking distances, reduced manoeuvrability, etc.

Studded winter tyres

These tyres have excellent grip, making the car easier to drive – especially important in winter. This makes studded tyres a good choice for drivers with little driving experience.

Studded winter tyres are suitable for icy or unpaved roads – if you frequently drive on country and forest roads, studded tyres are definitely the way to go. However, studded winter tyres damage the outer layer of the road surface, so sometimes drivers decide to go for a different type of tyre. Last but not least, studded tyres are banned in many European countries – something to bear in mind if you plan to travel outside Latvia.

Soft compound or Scandinavian winter tyres

Friction (Scandinavian) tyres are a good alternative to studded tyres. They are also designed for driving in decent winter conditions, and with this type of tyre the road surface is not damaged and fuel consumption is much lower.

These winter tyres are suitable for driving in decent winter conditions. They are made of a material designed for low temperatures and provide good grip on dry ice and packed snow. Friction tyres also provide excellent comfort – they are quiet and pleasant to drive.
