Frequently asked questions

  • Which tyres are right for my car?
Your car will handle best, be safer and be more economical with the tyre size specified by the manufacturer. This size can usually be seen in the door opening of the car or on the fuel filler cap.

If your car has had a different owner in the past, our experts strongly recommend that you check the standard tyre size for your car. Our experts will be happy to advise you and help you find the right tyre size.

  • When should I change my tyres?
Tyres should be changed when they are worn out, damaged, or as mandated by law.

In Latvia, all vehicles are required to be equipped with winter tyres from December 1st to March 1st. However, winter tyres (without studs) can be installed as early as October 1st and used until May 1st.

Summer tyres, on the other hand, may be used from March 1st to December 1st.

The minimum tread depth for winter tyres is 4 mm, while the minimum tread depth for summer tyres is 1.6 mm.

If your vehicle has studded tyres, you must change them, even if you are traveling to a European country where driving with studded winter tyres is prohibited.

  • If I only want to change two tyres on my car, which is better?

If your car has only two tyres with significant wear, it may be worth checking and finding out the cause of the wear.
New tyres may be able to prevent it and prolong the life of your tyres.

If you only want to change two of the four tyres, it’s better to do it on the tow axle.

  • What is the difference between symmetrical, asymmetrical and directional tread patterns?

The directional tread pattern provides good grip and shorter braking distances, and is very good at shedding water.
It is imperative to follow the mounting direction when fitting these tyres.

The symmetrical tread pattern ensures very good water drainage.
When changing tyres, the mounting direction is not important.

Asymmetric – high performance on both dry and wet roads, good cornering stability, good water drainage.
When changing tyres, the inside and outside edges must be respected.

  • How does tyre choice affect fuel economy and braking distances?

Both braking distance and fuel consumption are affected by tyre choice.
It is important to choose not only good quality and new tyres, but also tyres that are suitable for the season, as these factors are influenced by the rubber composition (softness), tread and other details.
Tyres are usually labelled with their fuel consumption level: A for the lowest (best), G for the highest (worst).

  • Can my car be fitted with tyres of different sizes and tread patterns?

In theory, anything is possible, but will it be safe and comfortable?
Different tyre sizes can only be fitted to cars for which the car manufacturer has specified them.
The MMK service team recommends that you follow good tyre fitting practice and fit quality tyres of the correct size and tread pattern.

  • Can my insurer refuse to pay insurance if my car tyres did not comply with the law at the time of the accident?

Yes, the insurer has this right.
If your car is involved in an accident, the insurer may refuse to pay the insurance because of insufficient tyre tread depth or unsuitable tyres (e.g. driving on summer tyres in winter).

  • What is a tipping point and when should it be regulated?

Our experts recommend adjusting the toe-in after every tyre fitting or once a year.
Correctly adjusted camber will keep your car stable, make it easier to drive and prolong the life of your tyres.

  • What should I do if I feel the car vibrating while driving?

You should definitely seek professional advice, as there can be several causes for car vibrations.
It is advisable to find out the cause and remedy it as soon as possible.

  • How often should the torsion be adjusted?

It is recommended to adjust the alignment at least once a year and after each tyre fitting.

  • Why do tyres wear unevenly?

There can be many reasons for uneven tyre wear.
Some of them are damage to the rolling section, incorrect pressure, excessive weight, misalignment or misalignment, etc. c.

  • How to store tyres properly?
Tyres are best stored with rims.
This reduces the chance of damage to the tyres each time they are mounted on the rims.
It is also advisable to store tyres in a dry, cool place where they are not directly exposed to sunlight.
Tyre centres, including MMK Service, usually ensure that tyres are stored in appropriate conditions.
  • When and why should tyres be balanced?

Tyre balancing should be carried out before each season to prevent possible vibrations that compromise driving safety and comfort, and to prevent premature tyre wear.

  • Do tyres come with a warranty?

    Yes, of course.
Every tyre manufacturer guarantees its tyres accordingly.
However, the tyre warranty does not cover mechanical damage to the tyre, e.g. punctures, hitting a sharp object, etc.

  • What is the European Union label on tyres and what does it mean?
From 1 November 2012, all tyres produced in the EU must be labelled with a single standard label containing information on rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise level. The label aims to improve road safety by promoting the selection of fuel-efficient and safe tyres with low noise levels. Under EU rules, tyre manufacturers self-certify their tyres. Each tyre model and size is individually tested, classified, and then certified. Therefore, based on these common criteria, we strongly recommend paying attention to the labelling before purchasing tyres, as it will provide valuable information about their quality.
