Frequently asked questions

  • Which tyres are right for my car?
For optimal performance, safety, and fuel efficiency, always choose the tyre size recommended by your car’s manufacturer. This size is usually visible in the car’s door opening or on the fuel filler cap.

If your car has had a different owner in the past, we strongly recommend that you check the correct tyre size is being used for your car. Our experts will gladly advise you and help you find the right tyre size.

  • When should I change my tyres?
Tyres should be changed when they are worn out, damaged, or as mandated by law.

In Latvia, all vehicles must be equipped with winter tyres from December 1st to March 1st. However, winter tyres (without studs) can be installed as early as October 1st and used until May 1st.

Summer tyres, on the other hand, may be used from March 1st to December 1st. The minimum tread depth for winter tyres is 4 mm, while the minimum tread depth for summer tyres is 1.6 mm.

If your vehicle has studded tyres, you must change them if you’re travelling to a European country where driving with studded winter tyres is prohibited.

  • If I only want to change two tyres on my car, which is better?
If your car has only two tyres with significant wear, it may be worth checking and finding out the cause. When replacing just two tyres, installing the new tyres on the tow axle is generally recommended, as it ensures better stability and control, particularly in wet or slippery conditions.
  • What is the difference between symmetrical, asymmetrical, and directional tread patterns?
The directional tread pattern provides good grip and shorter braking distances and is very good at shedding water. It’s imperative to follow the mounting direction when fitting these tyres.

The symmetrical tread pattern ensures very good water drainage. The mounting direction is not important when changing tyres.

Asymmetric treads offer high performance on both dry and wet roads, good cornering stability, and good water drainage. When changing tyres, the inside and outside edges must be respected.

  • How does tyre choice affect fuel economy and braking distances?

Both braking distance and fuel consumption are affected by tyre choice. Choose high-quality, season-appropriate tyres, as factors like rubber composition (softness), tread design, and softness impact performance and safety. Tyres are usually labelled with their fuel consumption level: A for the lowest (best), G for the highest (worst).

  • Can my car be fitted with tyres of different sizes and tread patterns?

In theory, anything is possible, but will it be safe and comfortable? Different tyre sizes should only be fitted to cars for which the car manufacturer has specified them. The MMK service team recommends that you fit quality tyres of the correct size and tread pattern.

  • Can my insurer refuse to pay insurance if my car tyres did not comply with the law at the time of the accident?

Yes, if your car is involved in an accident, the insurer may refuse to pay out the insurance because of insufficient tyre tread depth or unsuitable tyres (e.g., driving with summer tyres in winter).

  • What is a tipping point, and when should it be regulated?

Our experts recommend adjusting the toe-in after every tyre fitting or once a year. Correctly adjusted camber will keep your car stable, make it easier to drive, and prolong the life of your tyres.

  • What should I do if I feel the car vibrating while driving?

You should definitely seek professional advice as soon as possible, as there can be several causes for car vibrations.

  • How often should the torsion be adjusted?
Adjusting the alignment at least once a year and after each tyre fitting is recommended.
  • Why do tyres wear unevenly?

Uneven tyre wear can result from several factors, including damage to the rolling surface, incorrect tyre pressure, excessive vehicle weight, or misalignment issues such as improper wheel alignment or balancing.

  • How should I store tyres properly?
Tyres should remain mounted on rims to minimise the risk of damage during remounting. Store tyres in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Tyre centres, including MMK, store tyres in appropriate conditions.
  • When and why should tyres be balanced?
Tyre balancing should be carried out before each season to prevent possible vibrations that compromise driving safety and comfort, as well as to prevent premature tyre wear.
  • Do tyres come with a warranty?

Yes, of course. Every tyre manufacturer guarantees its tyres accordingly. However, the tyre warranty does not cover mechanical damage to the tyre, for example, punctures or hitting a sharp object.

  • What is the European Union label on tires, and what does it mean?
From 1st November 2012, all tires produced in the EU must be labelled with a single standard label containing information on rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise level. The label helps consumers select tires that improve road safety and fuel efficiency and reduce noise pollution.

Under EU rules, tire manufacturers self-certify their tires. Each tire model and size is individually tested, classified, and certified. So, based on these common criteria, we strongly recommend that you pay attention to the labelling before you buy tires.
