What is tyre alignment and why is it important?
Alignment is the position of the wheels of a car, which determines whether the wheels are pointing slightly inwards or outwards when viewed from above. It is part of the wheel geometry and adjusting it correctly helps to ensure even tyre wear, better handling and safe driving.
Wheel alignment is very important as wheels that are not aligned can cause problems such as:
- Rapid or uneven tyre wear;
- Increased fuel consumption;
- Reduced driving comfort;
- Poor handling.
What is torsion adjustment?
Alignment is the process of adjusting the geometry of the wheels of a vehicle to precisely set the angle between the wheels according to the manufacturer’s technical specifications. This alignment ensures even tyre wear, improves handling, stability and driving safety.
What are the signs that a torsion adjustment is needed?
Handling problems where the car is constantly pulled to one side or the other can be one of the most important signs that the linkage needs adjusting. In addition to steering misalignment, abnormal steering action such as off-centre steering or vibrations on a flat road when driving straight, as well as uneven tyre tread wear, can also be indicative of a misalignment. While the vehicle is stationary, it is possible to measure the tread depth at several points on the tyre. If the inner or outer edge of the tyre is more worn, this may be an indication that the alignment needs to be adjusted.
How is wheel alignment done?
If you have no previous experience, it is not advisable to adjust the torsion yourself as it requires a high degree of precision and technical knowledge. The adjustment process involves the correct adjustment of the toe and camber so that the vehicle meets the manufacturer’s specification and will not always have perfectly straight wheels at 0 degrees.
Most modern cars have three aspects of the torsional control process – the camber, the weight and the casters or steering axle.

Tilt and roll control
Correctly adjusting the camber is important to guarantee precise and stable handling. By adjusting the camber, the inward or outward tilt of the wheel is corrected depending on the car specification. A positive or negative camber angle can have a negative effect on tyre wear and the car’s handling characteristics.

Weight and twist adjustment
The angle of twist is the parameter that most people associate with twist adjustment. The toe-in affects the angle at which the wheels are positioned in relation to both the direction the car is travelling and to each other. The wheels of a car must not be excessively ‘cambered’ or ‘toe-in’, and their angles must match the manufacturer’s specifications. It is problems with camber that can most quickly damage the treads of a car’s tyres by unevenly splitting them or even tearing out chunks of rubber.

Casters or steering axle adjustment
The steering axle is the line between the upper and lower joints of the wheel. The wheel angle is adjusted in the yaw adjustment to indicate how far forward or back (towards or away from the driver) the steering axis is. Most vehicles have positive casters, which means that the steering axis is biased towards the driver. Therefore, steering loads are increased to ensure better straight-ahead stability.
How much does it cost to adjust the torsion?
The cost of the twist can vary depending on a number of factors, taking into account:
- Can the car’s linkage be adjusted on both axles;
- Car size and type – car, SUV or commercial vehicle.
The price of a car alignment is usually between €30 and €50.
Why is torsion adjustment necessary?
Poor tyre alignment can lead to accelerated or uneven tyre wear and can have a serious impact on tyre grip, especially in winter conditions. MMK Tyre Centre experts recommend that you check your tyre alignment regularly to avoid unplanned tyre changes and higher running costs.
Ensuring even tyre wear
Rapid and uneven tyre wear means you’ll need to replace your tyres more often, leading to higher costs. That’s why wheel alignment helps reduce long-term vehicle maintenance expenses.
No increase in fuel consumption
Incorrect wheel alignment can lead to handling issues, such as the vehicle pulling to one side or creating additional braking forces. These problems increase rolling resistance, which in turn raises fuel consumption.
Contributes to greater comfort on the move
Incorrect tyre alignment can make the vehicle’s movement jerky and cause unpleasant steering vibrations, leading to driver fatigue.
Frequently asked questions
-
How often should I adjust my irritation?
It is not clear exactly how often the torsion needs to be adjusted. The frequency of torsion adjustment depends on driving conditions and habits. Many experts in the field recommend that the alignment should be checked every time the car has been serviced or had a tyre change. If the car has low-profile tyres, which are less shock-absorbing on bumpy roads, the alignment should be checked more frequently.
The main car repair and maintenance tasks for which it is recommended to carry out a torsional adjustment are:
- Changing tyres;
- Replacement or repair of any part of the rolling stock/suspension system;
- Checks after various accidents, including high impacts, potholes or other collisions.
If your tyres or rims are damaged, it is essential to check the alignment, as the impact that caused the damage is likely to have “knocked out” the suspension geometry and will need to be adjusted.
-
How long does it take to adjust the torsion?
Adjusting the torsion is not a time-consuming procedure and usually takes up to about one hour. Exceptional cases where it may take a little longer are when the mechanic finds broken or worn suspension components that take longer to replace.
-
How long is a fine-tuned restraint good for?
The precise working time of the adjustable torsion depends on your daily driving conditions and driving style. Vehicles driven in sporty conditions with higher speeds and more aggressive braking, or on rough roads, will require more frequent adjustments. On the other hand, cars that are used exclusively for urban driving may need less frequent alignment checks.
-
What happens if the wheel alignment is not adjusted?
If the wheel geometry is not adjusted, tyres can wear much faster and more unevenly. Uneven tyre wear can affect safety and make journeys less comfortable, so it is good practice to check your tyres regularly. Also, incorrect alignment means that tyres will need to be replaced sooner than expected. Therefore, spending around €30 on a camber adjustment can save you money on tyre replacement, which often costs more than €800-1000 per set.
-
How quickly do tyres with bad tyres wear?
Tyre wear caused by alignment problems depends on the severity of the problem. Over time, even small misalignments can shorten the life of a tyre by as much as 10 000-30 000 kilometres, while a large misalignment, if not corrected in time, can cause uneven wear or tear out pieces of rubber in a tyre within a few hundred kilometres.
-
Can incorrect wheel geometry cause vibrations?
Yes, of course. Incorrect wheel position can cause steering vibrations and a feeling that the whole car is shaking. Vibrations in the car contribute to faster wear of all parts, but especially suspension parts. MMK recommends that you have your alignment adjusted at least once a year, which will help you save money as well as ensure driving comfort and safety.
