Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 winter tyres feature an aggressive directional tread design. The number of tread blocks has also been increased, significantly improving the tyre's performance in deep snow.

Two of the leading technologies - Arctic Grip and Green Trace - were used to develop the tyre's rubber compound. As part of the Arctic Grip technology, a large number of harder rubber chips have been added to the rubber compound of this model.
