Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 winter tyres feature an aggressive directional tread design. The number of tread blocks has also been increased, significantly improving the tyre's performance in deep snow.
Two of the leading technologies - Arctic Grip and Green Trace - were used to develop the tyre's rubber compound. As part of the Arctic Grip technology, a large number of harder rubber chips have been added to the rubber compound of this model. These act as a kind of spikes as wear develops, digging into ice and packed snow with their sharp edges. Green Trace technology, in the soft part of the rubber compound, significantly extends the tyre's life and helps it remain flexible at lower temperatures. As part of this, natural rubber is added to the compound, making the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 a more environmentally friendly choice.
