How Are Steel and Alloy Wheels Repaired?
Even slight damage to rims can affect driving comfort, car bearings, suspension components and tyres due to improper fit.
Depending on the type of damage, steel or alloy wheel straightening, rolling, welding, and painting can be carried out to restore the wheel’s shape, strength, and visual appearance.
Straightening or Rolling Wheels
Straightening steel and alloy wheels helps to correct deformations caused by impacts from potholes, kerbs, and other obstacles. Rolling takes place in a specialised machine where the rim is gradually reshaped by a hydraulic press.
It should be noted that straightening cast wheels requires special precision, as they are more brittle and crack more easily than steel rims.
Welding of Steel and Cast Wheels
Wheel welding helps repair cracks, rebuild broken fragments, and repair other structural damage. Before welding, the damaged areas of the wheel are cleaned and filled with a high-quality metal alloy using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding technology.
Welding alloy wheels is an effective solution for extending their life, but welded rims may need to be replaced in order to pass a vehicle’s MOT. Timely wheel repair is important for your car’s safety.
Painting of Car Rims
Quality wheel painting prevents peeling paint, rust, and oxidation spots. Any shade can be restored or reapplied by powder coating. In addition, alloy wheels, unlike steel wheels, can be both painted and coated with decorative finishes.

The larger the rim, the more complex it is to straighten. It may have more extensive deformations, requiring more force and a longer processing time to remove the defects. Therefore, the cost of rolling R20 and larger wheels is generally higher than for smaller wheels.
